Tooth Extractions Huntington Beach – Oral Surgery

Why Might I Need an Extraction?

Unhealthy or damaged teeth affect more than just your smile — they can contribute to infection, bone loss, and problems with neighboring teeth. At Kali Dental, we always try to save your natural teeth first. But when a tooth cannot be saved, a gentle extraction is often the most protective option for your overall oral health.

Extractions are most commonly performed for wisdom teeth that are impacted or erupting incorrectly. They are also required when a tooth is too decayed or damaged for a crown, or when severe infection cannot be resolved with root canal therapy. Dental implants require the removal of the unhealthy tooth first — Dr. Kalvin will walk you through the full plan.

Your unique bone density and jaw health will determine if you require ridge preservation or bone grafting following your extraction. We will walk you through every next step.

Wisdom Teeth Extractions

Wisdom teeth are the last molars to come in — usually in your late teens or early twenties. When there is not enough room in your jaw for them to erupt properly, they become impacted. Impacted wisdom teeth can cause significant pain, crowding against neighboring teeth, and even infection if bacteria gets trapped around the partially erupted tooth.

Unexplained headaches, jaw pain or neck stiffness can sometimes be traced back to a wisdom tooth. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, schedule an appointment so we can take X-rays and identify the cause.

Not everyone needs their wisdom teeth removed — Dr. Kalvin will assess whether yours are causing a problem now or are likely to in the future.

The Extraction Process

We'll discuss all options with you on whether you need one tooth extraction or several teeth removed.

Procedure Prep

Most extractions require only local anesthesia. We make sure you are completely numb before we begin — most patients are surprised by how comfortable the process is. Our office does not offer sedation, but we can point you in the right direction if you prefer to have it. Our goal is to make you as comfortable as possible during the extraction.

Extraction & Healing

The extraction itself usually takes only a few minutes. Once the tooth is removed, the area is cleaned of any infected tissue. If needed, a bone graft is added to preserve your ridge, and the site is sutured if necessary.

The initial recovery typically takes 1–2 weeks. If you received a bone graft, it will take several months before the graft is replaced with your own bone. You'll leave with written aftercare instructions and Dr. Kalvin's direct line if anything feels off.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are extractions covered by dental insurance?

Most dental insurance plans cover tooth extractions, particularly for impacted wisdom teeth and teeth damaged by decay or trauma. Coverage percentages vary by plan. Kali Dental can verify your benefits before treatment. Patients without insurance can also ask about the Kali Dental Savings Plan.

Will I be in pain after my extraction? How long does it take to heal?

The extraction is performed under local anesthesia, so you will not feel pain during the procedure. Some soreness, swelling, bruising, and bleeding may naturally begin within a few hours. These symptoms tend to peak in the first 2–3 days and fade as you heal. Eat mostly soft foods for 5–7 days after treatment. Most patients fully heal in 1–2 weeks. Call us if you experience severe pain or unusual symptoms after the first week.

When is tooth extraction necessary?

Tooth extractions may be necessary for an extremely severe cavity, severe damage from oral trauma, or an infected tooth that cannot be saved with root canal therapy. In most cases, a crown or root canal can save the tooth — but sometimes extraction is the only option. Impacted or incorrectly erupting wisdom teeth are the most common reason for extractions. Severe periodontal disease that has caused a tooth to loosen may also require extraction to prepare for dental implants or dentures.

Will I need a bone graft after my extraction?

In many cases, we will recommend a ridge preservation bone graft after an extraction. By filling the space left by the extracted tooth, we can maintain the integrity of your jawbone. This helps preserve your bone and provides a solid foundation for a dental implant in the future. Dr. Kalvin will advise whether a graft is right for your situation.

Can a wisdom tooth cause jaw and neck pain?

Yes. Impacted or infected wisdom teeth can cause referred pain that radiates to the jaw, ear, and neck. If you are experiencing unexplained jaw pain or neck stiffness alongside tooth discomfort, it is worth having your wisdom teeth evaluated with X-rays.

What is the difference between a simple and a surgical extraction?

A simple extraction is performed on a tooth that is visible above the gum line and can be loosened and removed with forceps. A surgical extraction is required for teeth that are impacted, broken at the gum line, or have curved roots. Most wisdom tooth extractions are surgical extractions performed under local anesthesia at Kali Dental.
