Wisdom teeth are the last molars to come in — usually in your late teens or early twenties. When there is not enough room in your jaw for them to erupt properly, they become impacted. Impacted wisdom teeth can cause significant pain, crowding against neighboring teeth, and even infection if bacteria gets trapped around the partially erupted tooth.

Most extractions require only local anesthesia. We make sure you are completely numb before we begin — most patients are surprised by how comfortable the process is. Our office does not offer sedation, but we can point you in the right direction if you prefer to have it. Our goal is to make you as comfortable as possible during the extraction.
The extraction itself usually takes only a few minutes. Once the tooth is removed, the area is cleaned of any infected tissue. If needed, a bone graft is added to preserve your ridge, and the site is sutured if necessary.
The initial recovery typically takes 1–2 weeks. If you received a bone graft, it will take several months before the graft is replaced with your own bone. You'll leave with written aftercare instructions and Dr. Kalvin's direct line if anything feels off.
Most dental insurance plans cover tooth extractions, particularly for impacted wisdom teeth and teeth damaged by decay or trauma. Coverage percentages vary by plan. Kali Dental can verify your benefits before treatment. Patients without insurance can also ask about the Kali Dental Savings Plan.
The extraction is performed under local anesthesia, so you will not feel pain during the procedure. Some soreness, swelling, bruising, and bleeding may naturally begin within a few hours. These symptoms tend to peak in the first 2–3 days and fade as you heal. Eat mostly soft foods for 5–7 days after treatment. Most patients fully heal in 1–2 weeks. Tooth extractions may be necessary for an extremely severe cavity, severe damage from oral trauma, or an infected tooth that cannot be saved with root canal therapy. In most cases, a crown or root canal can save the tooth — but sometimes extraction is the only option. Impacted or incorrectly erupting wisdom teeth are the most common reason for extractions. Severe periodontal disease that has caused a tooth to loosen may also require extraction to prepare for dental implants or dentures.
In many cases, we will recommend a ridge preservation bone graft after an extraction. By filling the space left by the extracted tooth, we can maintain the integrity of your jawbone. A simple extraction is performed on a tooth that is visible above the gum line and can be loosened and removed with forceps. A surgical extraction is required for teeth that are impacted, broken at the gum line, or have curved roots. Most wisdom tooth extractions are surgical extractions performed under local anesthesia at Kali Dental.
